This Iranian calendar booklet was designed around the idea of bringing traditional Persian visual culture into a contemporary graphic design language.
The concept combines elements inspired by classical Persian art and ornamentation with modern typography, composition and a restrained colour palette. Rather than reproducing historical styles directly, I wanted to use them as a visual reference and reinterpret them in a simpler, more contemporary form.
Where Heritage Meets Modern Design
One of the main visual elements is Boteh Jegheh (Persian Paisley) — a distinctive motif with a long history in Persian decorative arts, textiles and traditional design.
I used the repeated Boteh Jegheh pattern as a subtle background texture, creating a connection with Persian cultural heritage without allowing the ornamentation to dominate the composition.
In contrast, the bold Persian typography and minimal layout introduce a more modern visual language. This balance between detailed traditional patterns and simple contemporary forms became the central character of the design.
A Modern Interpretation of Persian Identity
The project explores how cultural identity and traditional design elements can remain relevant within modern visual communication.
Instead of treating Persian heritage as decoration alone, the aim was to make it part of the overall design system — combining pattern, typography, composition, colour and negative space to create a visual identity that feels culturally familiar while still contemporary.
The muted, almost monochromatic cover also gives the traditional pattern a quieter role, allowing the typography and composition to create the main visual hierarchy.
Designed as a Printed Object
As a booklet calendar, the project required consideration of both visual identity and practical editorial structure. The design needed to remain consistent across multiple pages while presenting calendar information clearly and maintaining the overall Persian-inspired visual language.
This project brought together editorial design, Persian typography, pattern design and print production, with attention to the relationship between traditional aesthetics and modern graphic communication.
